The Borderless Boom: Why Africa’s Rapidly Expanding Economy is Outgrowing Its Payment Rails

Written By: Flipbz.org

Africa’s digital landscape has shifted dramatically. From remote tech talents in Yaba and Kilimani earning global dollars, to merchants sourcing goods across the continent, everyday consumers and businesses are living and transacting without borders.

The only problem? The financial infrastructure holding up this massive economic movement is lagging far behind.

According to renowned fintech expert and media entrepreneur Benjamin Dada, Africa has officially entered an era where consumers are becoming borderless much faster than the payment systems and regulatory frameworks meant to serve them.

A $329 Billion Market Struggling with Legacy Friction

Recent data places Africa’s cross-border payments market at a staggering $329 billion, expanding at a robust annual growth rate of roughly 12 percent. This growth is heavily propelled by a surge in digital commerce, aggressive mobile money adoption, and regional trade tailwinds like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Yet, operational bottlenecks continue to frustrate businesses and individuals alike. Speaking during a virtual press conference ahead of an upcoming industry gathering, Dada pointed out that public conversations around cross-border transactions are still bogged down by outdated metrics.

Worse still, intra-African logistics and trade corridors remain ironically more expensive than international routes. Highlighting stark operational realities, Dada noted that moving goods between certain African countries can cost significantly more than shipping cargo straight from the United Kingdom to Nigeria.

The Convergence at Landmark Centre

To tackle these structural disconnects head-on, industry stakeholders are preparing to converge in Lagos. Organised by Benjamin Dada’s tech media outfit, The Borderless Experience conference is scheduled to hold on August 21, 2026, at the Landmark Event Centre.

Unlike typical tech summits that lean heavily on high-level jargon, this one-day event is designed to drill down into the practical realities of cross-border commerce. The lineup will bring together banking executives managing treasury and settlement, fintech founders, regulatory bodies, telecommunications players, cybersecurity experts, airlines, and logistics operators.

Discussions are expected to center around three critical pillars:

  • Mapping out the structural shifts in Africa’s interconnected economy.
  •  Identifying the infrastructure required to support this transformation.
  •  Mitigating mounting risks, including cybercrime, settlement failures, foreign exchange volatility, and regulatory fragmentation.

Building Trusted Rails for the Future

As emerging technologies like stablecoins and artificial intelligence begin to reshape how funds are initiated, settled, and monitored, experts agree that payments are only part of the puzzle. Ultimately, what moves across borders are people, goods, and services, with financial rails acting merely as the enabler.

For Africa’s borderless economy to reach its full potential, governments, financial institutions, and tech innovators must move past isolated patches and build a cohesive, trusted digital payment architecture. Until then, closing the infrastructure gap remains the ultimate test for the continent’s economic integration.
