Miri Africa has quietly built one of the more consequential climate tech infrastructure plays on the continent, and a string of recent milestones shows just how quickly its environmental monitoring network is scaling. Founded in 2022, the company builds IoT hardware and software that collects real time data on air quality, weather, emissions and other environmental conditions, combining physical sensors with dashboards, analytics and APIs into what it describes as an African environmental data infrastructure layer, the kind of foundational data most African cities and institutions have historically lacked entirely.

That infrastructure has now expanded well beyond a single market. Miri's monitoring network currently spans Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, with more than 100 active monitoring devices deployed and collecting data across those markets. But the company's biggest validation yet came through a major public sector win. Miri secured a deployment contract with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency for 2,000 Miri Air devices, a scale of deployment that would meaningfully expand real time environmental monitoring coverage across one of Africa's largest and most densely populated cities, and one that signals growing government appetite for data driven approaches to tackling air quality and pollution challenges.

The company's growth trajectory has also caught the attention of one of the continent's more selective accelerator programmes. As part of Accelerate Africa's fourth cohort, Miri reported more than 400,000 dollars in revenue, a 77,000 dollar monthly run rate, four anchor enterprise contracts, and more than 365 deployed sensor stations by demo day, numbers that reflect a company moving well past early pilots into genuine commercial scale with enterprise clients willing to commit to recurring contracts.

That growth is now translating directly into hiring. Miri is actively recruiting engineers, product designers, technicians and other roles based in Lagos, a clear signal that the company is building out its team to support both its expanding device network and the software layer processing the data those devices generate. For a company still small enough to be actively growing its core team, that scale of recruitment alongside a 2,000 unit government contract and multiple six figure enterprise deals paints a picture of a startup moving decisively from proof of concept into infrastructure other institutions are beginning to depend on.

The broader opportunity behind Miri's bet is substantial. Much of Africa still lacks the basic environmental monitoring infrastructure that policymakers, businesses and researchers elsewhere take for granted, leaving governments and companies making decisions about air quality, climate resilience and emissions with limited real time data to act on. By building the sensor hardware, software dashboards and API layer all under one roof, Miri is positioning itself to become the default data backbone for African institutions increasingly under pressure to measure and respond to environmental conditions, starting with a landmark deployment in Lagos that could set the template for how other African cities approach environmental monitoring next.
