Vendy Rebrands as "Agentic Payments" Infrastructure, Betting Commerce Belongs Inside the Chat

Written By: Flipbz.org

Vendy has spent the past few years quietly building one of Africa's more distinctive payment plays, and its latest positioning marks a clear evolution from where it started. Launched in 2022 by Kayode Disu and Peter Ekunkoya, YC backed Vendy presents as a WhatsApp storefront where sellers can set up a catalog and buyers can browse, shop, and pay, letting merchants build eye catching product catalogues with prices, descriptions and images without ever needing a separate website or app.

What began as a WhatsApp specific tool has since expanded into something more ambitious. Vendy now describes itself as agentic payments infrastructure for social platforms, helping businesses accept payments directly within messaging apps, social media, and AI chatbots, making commerce conversational and seamless. The company built this around what it calls its Unified Payment Agent technology, where instead of forcing users to leave their chat to visit a website or app, the infrastructure triggers a specialized checkout agent that handles the payment securely within the existing environment, reducing friction and drop offs.

That shift matters because it repositions Vendy beyond being just another WhatsApp shop. The startup is currently optimized for WhatsApp, Instagram, and Telegram, while also supporting commerce workflows via SMS, email, and QR codes, and Meta Business Service Providers, automation providers, and CPaaS platforms are already using its UPA technology to accept payments inside WhatsApp, checkout on Instagram and TikTok DMs, and enable instant payments across SMS and email without redirects. On the payment rails side, Vendy supports multiple methods including bank transfers, card payments, USSD, and mobile money, giving merchants one integration that unlocks access to payment channels across Africa and beyond, with mobile money support spanning 19 African countries alongside cards, digital wallets and global systems like UPI.

The infrastructure has attracted genuine institutional partners too. Vendy previously teamed up with MoMo Payment Service Bank, which has over 19 million registered users, to launch a WhatsApp shop feature aimed at deepening financial inclusion across Nigeria by merging MoMo's distribution network with Vendy's payment technology. The company has also built credibility as a Central Bank of Nigeria licensed Payment Solution Service Provider and Meta approved WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, while integrating directly with major Nigerian banks and mobile money providers including Sterling, Kuda, Opay, FCMB and First Bank.

Still, the company has been candid about the road ahead. Its reliance on WhatsApp means it is ultimately dependent on Meta's platform policies and ecosystem, while expanding across Africa brings regulatory complexities since each market carries its own compliance requirements, and payment infrastructure that works in Nigeria may not translate cleanly to Kenya or Francophone Africa. Even so, Vendy has stayed clear about its long term identity, insisting it is not simply another payment app but aims to be the preferred payment method the next time someone buys something from a WhatsApp or Instagram vendor, a bet that its agentic, chat native approach is where African social commerce is quietly heading next.
