Nigeria Set to Launch NigComSat-2A and 2B to Enhance Digital Infrastructure

Written By: Flipbz.org

Nigeria is gearing up to deploy two advanced communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B, in a strategic push to advance the nation’s digital transformation, bolster national security, and spur economic development.

The initiative, led by Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat Ltd), will see the new satellites replace NigComSat-1R, operational since 2011 and now projected to remain functional until early 2028 after a lifespan extension.

At a media training session in Abuja, Engr. Tope Yosoof, a senior official, revealed that the High-Throughput Satellites (HTS) will provide extensive coverage across West, Central, and Southern Africa, with partial reach into East Africa. Equipped with 77 transponders across multiple frequency bands, the satellites are designed to enhance broadband access, support national security efforts, and enable applications in education, agriculture, media, offshore operations, and smart city initiatives.

Yosoof noted that the project will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, with a Request for Proposal (RFP) already issued to engage leading global manufacturers and service providers.

Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director and CEO of NigComSat Ltd, underscored the critical role of the media in communicating Nigeria’s space technology ambitions. “The success of our digital agenda hinges not only on technical expertise and policy but also on how effectively the media conveys our technological narrative to the public,” she stated.

Blessing Olaifa, President of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA), hailed the training as a pivotal moment for media engagement in the tech sector, advocating for increased budgetary support to strengthen NigComSat’s outreach efforts.

The launch of NigComSat-2A and 2B positions Nigeria to solidify its status as a leader in Africa’s space industry, while fostering greater ICT access, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.
