The Nigerian government has unveiled plans to launch two advanced communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B, to propel the nation’s digital transformation, bolster national security, and stimulate economic development.
The initiative, led by the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat Ltd), aims to replace the aging NigComSat-1R, operational since 2011 and now extended to remain functional until January 2028. The new satellites are poised to revolutionize Nigeria’s technological landscape.
At a media training session held in Abuja, Engr. Tope Yosoof, a senior official, revealed that the High-Throughput Satellites (HTS) will provide extensive coverage across West, Central, Southern, and parts of East Africa. Equipped with 77 transponders across multiple frequency bands, NigComSat-2A and 2B will enable robust broadband services, support national security operations, and enhance sectors such as education, agriculture, media, offshore industries, and smart city development.
The satellite project will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, with NigComSat Ltd issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to engage global manufacturers and service providers. This collaborative approach is expected to accelerate deployment and ensure cutting-edge technology.
Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director and CEO of NigComSat Ltd, highlighted the critical role of media in advancing Nigeria’s space technology narrative. “Our journey toward a digitally transformed Nigeria relies not only on technical expertise and policy but also on the media’s ability to communicate our vision effectively,” she stated.
Blessing Olaifa, President of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA), praised the media training as a transformative step and called for increased budgetary support to strengthen NigComSat’s media outreach efforts.
The launch of NigComSat-2A and 2B positions Nigeria as a frontrunner in Africa’s space industry, promising enhanced ICT access, job creation, and inclusive economic growth. As the nation prepares for this milestone, stakeholders anticipate a significant leap toward a connected and technologically advanced future.
