Miden has become one of the more compelling fintech infrastructure stories out of Nigeria, built not around flashy consumer apps but around a problem most people never see: how businesses actually get cards into customers' hands. Founded in late 2022 by Dom Okiemute and Ini Udoh, Miden allows businesses to issue virtual cards to their customers through its API, empowering companies to seamlessly provide a range of financial products, from card issuance to expense management and core banking as a service. The pair brought a combined thirteen years of experience building financial systems across Nigerian banks to the venture, giving them an insider's view of exactly where the industry was breaking down.

That insider knowledge shaped Miden's entire pitch. Cards, virtual or otherwise, are pivotal to fintech companies in helping them increase volumes and build customer bases, but major card schemes are usually out of reach for smaller players, and building a card integration system with a bank can take up to a year. Miden's drag and drop API collapses that timeline dramatically, letting businesses issue their own virtual cards within weeks rather than months, in both US dollars and naira.

The traction that followed caught global attention quickly. Miden has issued over 100,000 cards across four countries, with top fintechs, travel agencies and commerce firms plugged into its programme. That growth helped the previously bootstrapped startup become one of only three African ventures selected for Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch, alongside fellow Nigerian fintech Cleva, securing 500,000 dollars in funding as part of the accelerator's shrunken and highly competitive African cohort.

The numbers behind the business have only strengthened since. Okiemute has disclosed that Miden has crossed 1.5 million dollars in annual recurring revenue and currently processes a couple of billion naira in transaction volume every month, while maintaining profitability by staying lean and focused on unit economics. Operating out of Ikeja under parent company Tyrus Technologies, the team has grown to around nineteen people, guided by Y Combinator group partner Tom Blomfield, and continues to position itself as a card issuer processor and banking stack built specifically for businesses across Sub Saharan Africa.

Challenges remain part of the story too. Okiemute has pointed to a scarcity of talent with localized domain knowledge as a persistent hurdle, while the broader virtual card space has been rattled by fraud incidents elsewhere on the continent and currency volatility that complicates dollar denominated card products. Even so, with regulatory hurdles being navigated and revenue climbing steadily, Miden's bet that African fintechs need faster, cheaper access to card infrastructure, rather than another consumer wallet, continues to look like one of the more durable plays in Nigeria's crowded fintech landscape.
