Glovo Doubles Down on Boosting Nigerian Small Businesses Through Hands-On Training Push

Glovo Doubles Down on Boosting Nigerian Small Businesses Through Hands-On Training Push

Written By: Flipbz.org

Glovo, the dynamic tech platform thriving across Europe, Africa, and Central Asia, is ramping up its support for small and medium-sized enterprises in Nigeria. The company rolled out the latest chapter of its Glovo Academy, a hands-on program packed with workshops and digital resources aimed at sharpening business skills, amplifying brands, and ramping up online orders via the app.

At the heart of this initiative lies a clear mission: equip local entrepreneurs with the know-how to streamline their day-to-day work and tap into fresh growth avenues. Reni Onafeko, who leads growth efforts for Glovo in Nigeria, shared during the event that the platform stays laser-focused on opening doors for these businesses through expert guidance and funding options. Since breaking into the Abuja market back in 2022, Glovo has handled more than a million deliveries, funneling over 11 billion naira straight to its partners. Orders have surged by a solid 30 percent year over year, with the network now linking up with more than 1,000 neighborhood eateries. Onafeko made a strong case for why small operators should dive into digital savvy, saying it paves the way for smarter scaling, clearer structures, and lasting success.

The gathering sparked lively discussions on the vital role these enterprises play in the nation's economy. Ifeoma Williams, a key advisor to the Minister of State for Industry, pointed out that small and medium outfits drive fully 40 percent of Nigeria's gross domestic product, according to fresh figures from the National Bureau of Statistics. She flagged a major roadblock: too many owners struggle to snag government loans because of shaky setups or incomplete strategies. Still, Williams highlighted ongoing federal moves to roll out friendlier rules and incentives that let these ventures truly flourish.

Echoing those sentiments, Tijani Mustapha, the brains behind Ahmad's Shawarma, got real about the grit it takes to run a small shop. He talked through headaches like managing staff and keeping standards high, but stressed that true staying power comes from bouncing back stronger. Mustapha pushed hard for tech upgrades as a game-changer. "In today's world, no smart operation skips the digital side," he said. "It lets you snag customer insights, stay on top of things, and keep getting better every step."

Government backing took center stage too, with Kayode Meyanbe, who oversees information and communications tech at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, laying out a slate of helpful programs. Through a tie-up with the Corporate Affairs Commission, they're offering no-cost setup for a whopping 250,000 outfits to get them officially on the books and unlock perks. Meyanbe also touted low-interest loans, pegged below 10 percent, cooked up with banks and backed by state-level cash infusions. On top of that, the agency ropes in specialists for tailored workshops on running a tight ship, delivered via spots like the Kaduna Business School and Lagos Business School to match real-world needs.

Wrapping up the insights, Kolawole Adeniyi, Glovo's commercial head in Nigeria, gave a rundown on the company's deeper roots in the region. Since stepping onto African soil in 2021, they've poured in 206 million euros to fuel expansion. A huge chunk of that energy flows to small players, who make up 90 percent of the partners, churning out 55 billion naira in tangible economic lift for the ecosystem.

The academy day buzzed with practical sessions zeroing in on must-haves like flawless operations, savvy marketing tricks, smoothing out client gripes, and building rock-solid financial smarts. Experts from the Enterprise Development Centre at Pan-Atlantic University led the charge on those business management deep dives, leaving attendees with actionable takeaways to hit the ground running. Through efforts like these, Glovo isn't just delivering packages; it's handing small businesses the tools to deliver big results.
