CropSafe has secured fresh backing that positions it to deepen its footprint across Nigeria's shea, palm kernel and soybean value chains, tackling a problem that quietly drains billions from the country's agricultural economy every year. In partnership with fund manager Beneficial Returns, Miller Center Capital has funded CropSafe Agro Services, a social enterprise building local processing capacity across the shea, palm kernel, and soy agricultural value chains in Nigeria, with the investment forming part of the Center's broader initiative with Bayer Foundation to advance health and nutrition, women's economic power, and climate resilience across Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.
The scale of the problem CropSafe is chasing is genuinely enormous. Nigeria experiences a drain of 8 billion dollars annually due to post-harvest losses, which are primarily caused by poor infrastructure, losses that lead to compromised food quality, heightened food insecurity, and decreased incomes for millions of smallholder farmers across the country. Traditional processing methods have long compounded that problem, with inefficient approaches like sun drying, which takes between two and three weeks, extending the window during which crops risk contamination and spoilage before they ever reach a buyer.
Founded in 2018, CropSafe industrializes early-stage agri-processing, including boiling, shelling, and drying, through solar-powered facilities that reduce post-harvest losses, save labor, and improve product quality, bringing processing capacity directly into rural communities rather than relying on the manual, time consuming methods that have historically dominated these value chains. That local footprint is built directly on relationships with the women who supply the raw materials. The enterprise sources directly from over 3,000 women collectors, offering fair prices and cash-on-delivery during the harvest season, a structure designed to give rural women immediate, reliable income rather than leaving them exposed to unpredictable market prices or delayed payments.
By CropSafe's own account, that model has translated into tangible community impact at meaningful scale. The company describes itself as a fast-growing post-harvest loss management and processing company, creating over 1,200 jobs annually in rural communities and training 3,000+ women and farmers, while its post-harvest preservation and processing of over 7,000 tons of goods has helped reduce food loss and strengthen local food security. CropSafe has also previously drawn backing from impact investor Acumen, which highlighted the company's strong impact potential and its ability to provide insights into models that improve the lives of smallholder farmers as central to its investment thesis.
With Miller Center Capital's fresh support now layered onto that existing foundation, CropSafe is positioned to push processing infrastructure deeper into more of Nigeria's rural farming communities, betting that solving post-harvest loss at the source, rather than after crops have already spoiled, is the more sustainable path to strengthening both local food security and the incomes of the rural women whose labor underpins Nigeria's shea, palm kernel and soybean value chains.
