Tech hubs in Nigeria play a crucial role in driving innovation, especially in supporting early-stage startups, helping with business model refinement, prototyping, mentoring, investment readiness, and creating networks. Over the past decade, the number of hubs has grown significantly, particularly in Lagos, Abuja, and increasingly in other states (e.g. Kwara, Plateau, etc.). According to GSMA & Briter Bridges, there are dozens of active hubs, with Nigeria often cited as having one of the densest networks in Africa. Program & mentorship: Offering incubation, acceleration, workshops, training, often with technical & business mentorship. Funding / investor connectivity: Ability to connect founders to angel / VC investors, sometimes provide seed grants or help prepare pitches. Community & network: Strong local ecosystems, events, collaborations with universities, government or international agencies. Geographic & demographic reach: While hubs in Lagos are most visible, emerging hubs in northern regions & smaller states are increasingly important for distributing tech activity. Challenges include funding sustainability, infrastructure issues (power, internet), regulatory / policy uncertainties, high cost of operations, and sometimes duplication of support without sufficient specialization. But the best hubs are adapting: focusing on local problems, being more regionally inclusive, offering hybrid virtual & physical support, and forming partnerships.
