In Nigeria, Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) are entities licensed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to distribute electricity from the transmission grid to end consumers (residential, commercial, industrial). Since privatization in 2013, there are 11 major DISCOs, each assigned specific geographic coverage areas (states or portions thereof). Performance of DISCOs is measured across several dimensions: metering rate (how many customers have functional meters vs. estimated billing), Collection Efficiency (how much of billed electricity is actually paid for), ATC&C losses (Aggregate Technical, Commercial & Collection losses), response to faults / outages / infrastructure upkeep, customer satisfaction / complaints, and safety and compliance. Over recent years, some DISCOs—especially Ikeja Electric, Eko Disco, AEDC—have led in metering progress, improved customer service tools (apps, self-service portals), and reducing losses. Others lag behind, particularly in rural or conflict-affected areas, where maintenance, metering, and infrastructure are less robust. Common challenges include: old / overloaded infrastructure, unreliable supply of bulk power, delays in meter deployment, estimated billing (which leads to complaints and distrust), revenue collection constraints, and safety incidents. Regulatory interventions (by NERC, NEMSA) and programmes like the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) scheme help push improvement. The best DISCOs are those showing advancement in metering, lowering complaint volumes, better fault handling, improved technical losses, and higher customer base. While no DISCO is perfect, the ones listed above are currently among the top in Nigeria by measurable metrics.
