Over the last decade, Nigeria has embarked on numerous large engineering and power sector projects to solve chronic electricity shortages, aging infrastructure, and rising demand. These span generation (hydro, thermal, solar, nuclear), transmission (high-voltage lines, sub-stations, SCADA/DMS control systems), distribution upgrades, and gas infrastructure (pipelines, gas supply to power plants, gas processing). Projects like Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station and Geregu Nuclear Power Plant represent major additions to generation capacity, both renewable and non-renewable, aiming for scale and long-term supply stability. On the thermal/gas-fired side, projects such as Azura-Edo and the expansion of solar plants like Azura Nova provide relatively quicker returns and are easier to deploy. At the same time, transmission projects (Energo Nigeria’s line relocation, TCN sub-station upgrades) are critical because generation alone isn’t enough if power cannot be transmitted reliably or if there are frequent outages due to line damage or environmental interference. Engineering firms are also engaged in gas pipeline pigging, valve installations, and detailed engineering design to support industrial and power users. These projects also often involve regulatory agencies, foreign and local contractors, and private-public partnerships. Challenges include securing financing, environmental & social impact, land acquisition, local content, and ensuring continuous maintenance. The success of these projects is essential to boosting Nigeria’s electricity supply reliability, enabling industrial growth, reducing dependency on diesel generators, and meeting energy transition goals.
