A groundbreaking new program backed by Austrian development funds is set to empower hundreds of tech professionals in Kenya and Uganda, giving them the tools and support needed to step out of traditional roles and build their own innovative companies.
Known as Tech Wings Africa, the fully funded initiative aims to guide 200 skilled individuals through a comprehensive journey from idea to launch. Supported by the Austrian Development Agency, the program brings together expertise from Tunga Academy, StartHub Africa, and VC4A to create a structured pathway for aspiring entrepreneurs who might otherwise stay on the sidelines.
The effort unfolds over five separate cohorts, each welcoming 40 participants. It kicks off with an intensive one-week bootcamp that combines practical startup training with essential soft skills development. From there, participants split into two tailored paths designed to match their readiness and ambitions.
Those eager to dive straight in can join the "Build Now" track, where a select group of 10 per cohort receives five months of hands-on support to turn concepts into viable businesses. By the program's end, organizers expect at least 10 new revenue-generating startups to emerge, complete with formal registration and early customers.
For others still honing their vision, the "Future Founders" track offers a gentler start: a month dedicated to brainstorming and validating ideas, followed by personalized coaching over the next five months. Participants wrap up with polished business models, real-world customer insights, and clear strategies to hit the market.
Every person who completes the bootcamp gains entry to VC4A's extensive mentorship network, unlocking hundreds of hours of expert advice from seasoned entrepreneurs and investors. On top of that, the program facilitates 100 paid internships across African tech companies, lasting three to six months each. These roles blend technical work with leadership opportunities, while helping startups fill key positions with fresh talent.
" This is about unlocking potential and creating a ripple effect of innovation," said Steve Suchi, CEO of Tunga Academy. "By eliminating financial and knowledge barriers, we're helping talented developers become the next generation of job creators in their communities."
No previous founding experience is required, making the opportunity accessible to motivated tech professionals ready to commit six months to their entrepreneurial dreams. With the first group starting early next year, applications are already open and reviewed as they come in.
Tech Wings Africa stands out as a fresh approach to fostering homegrown innovation in East Africa, bridging European support with local ambition to spark sustainable growth from within the continent's booming tech scene.
