In a bold move to shake up the state's reliance on oil and civil service jobs, Governor Umo Eno has rolled out plans to supercharge the private sector through targeted reforms and fresh investments. His administration is pouring resources into tourism, hospitality, trade, and investment, all part of the ambitious ARISE Agenda aimed at building a more diverse and resilient economy.
The governor kicked off the fourth Akwa Ibom Tropicana Trade Fair at the bustling Ibom Tropicana Complex, standing in for him through Trade and Investment Commissioner Capt. Iniobong Ekong, a retired military man with a sharp eye for opportunity. Eno praised the event's organizers for pulling together such a vibrant showcase, pointing out how it spotlights commerce as a powerhouse for growth. With more than 100 exhibitors filling the space to the brim, the fair turned into a whirlwind of activity, far exceeding expectations for turnout.
Eno doubled down on his pledge to back micro, small, and medium enterprises with practical help: straightforward grants, loans that skip the interest trap, and smoother paths to new markets. It's a clear signal that his team sees these smaller outfits as the real engines of tomorrow's economy.
Backed by heavy hitters like Market Square, Guinness, Ibom Air, ECEWS, and Champion Breweries, this year's edition, dubbed the Tropicana Shopping Fiesta, is all about giving local makers a leg up toward steady economic wins. Vendors spilled over every available spot, hawking everything from classroom tools and fresh eats to trendy kids' outfits, gadgets, cozy home accents, and handmade gems like scented soaps, skincare goodies, and unique accessories.
Magdalene Mendie, the public relations lead for organizers A&NE Consults, lit up when talking about the fair's roots. She described it as a game-changer for up-and-coming businesses, letting them connect with crowds of eager buyers all in one lively hub. For shoppers, it's the ultimate holiday hunt, hands down the state's top event for snagging deals. Looking ahead, Mendie shared the bigger picture: linking fresh talent to bigger regional and national stages, sparking exports of homegrown products and skills.
And it's not just about the buys. The whole setup buzzes with family-friendly vibes, complete with food stalls dishing out quick bites, live tunes, and stage acts that keep the energy high for everyone wandering through.
Joining the excitement were heavyweights like Lands Commissioner Dr. Ubong Inyang, Internal Security Commissioner Gen. Koko Essien, a fellow retiree from the forces, State Hotel and Tourism Board Chair Mrs. Ime Udo, and ECEWS rep Dr. Andy Eyo. Their presence underscored the fair's role as a launchpad for Akwa Ibom's economic fresh start.
